Chenin Blanc is one of the most original white grape varieties in the entire French wine scene, used for the production of: botrytized, sweet, sparkling and white wines. Native to the Loire Valley and also known as Pineau de Loire, it is also grown in South Africa, Australia and even in some areas of South America. These are intense, mineral wines with characteristic green apple notes, and are most commonly associated with the Savennieres appellation, while Vouvray offers both dry and sweet wines with tropical, honeyed notes. Chenin Blanc is also the basis of the Cremant de Loire sparkling wines in the Anjou, Saumur and Touraine appellations. The sweet botrytized wines based on Chenin Blanc are less structured than those from Sauternes, but have the same predisposition to aging.
