Housed in an 18th-century castle in Ghazir, about 25 km north of Beirut, Chateau Musar was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, inspired by Lebanon’s 6,000-year-old winemaking tradition; after a long journey in the Bordeaux region, he understood that Lebanon’s climate and soil conditions would allow him to produce equally important wines. Today, it is the third generation of the family to continue this extraordinary legacy. The vineyards are located in the famous Bekaa Valley at an altitude of around 1,000 metres, an area celebrated for viticulture since biblical times. The remote location of the vineyards, combined with the Hochar family’s respect for the environment, has seen the land farmed organically since the 1950s, long before the term became fashionable. Chateau Musar wines are produced with a “non-interventionist” winemaking philosophy, produced from the most important European varieties: from Cabernet Sauvignon to Grenache. Chateau Musar is known for its finesse, elegance and extraordinary capacity to age. The owner, Serge Hochar, said: "the harmony of nature is better than anything we could ever create, I believe it should be a priority to try to drink what is true rather than what is good"; what is technically perfect therefore lacks the charm of imperfection.
