The term Gurnaccia or Guarnaccino can be ascribed to one or more vines cultivated in ancient times in Campania and Calabria, but the southern use of this term to refer to very different varieties of vines probably derives from its etymology, which from Latin takes the meaning of "provide, defend, guarantee" and therefore probably "variety of rustic grapes that guaranteed the year's harvest". Guarnaccia-Guarnacchello, moreover, in the rural communities of the area indicated a woman's dress obtained with "accia" fabric (rough thread of different materials), that is, rustic.
