Freisa is a native black grape variety of Piedmont, widespread in the Monferrato Astigiano and Casalese, up to the Langa Cuneese and from the Turin hills to the hills of Saluzzo, Pinerolo, Canavese and Novarese. Freisa is a vigorous vine, and has medium-high yields especially in the Grosso subtype. It has a medium-late ripening and is grown in counter-espalier and Guyot, with long and wide pruning. Freisa resists diseases and mold well even if it shows a certain sensitivity to powdery mildew. The clayey and marly soils of Piedmont are an excellent place for Freisa, which is used both pure and in blends throughout the region. Freisa gives wines color and good tannic concentration and fruity aromas. The acid component and the structure allow it to age for medium periods. On the palate it can be dry or sweet and can be presented in a slightly sparkling version. When young it is a fresh wine, with liveliness and brilliance, while with time it takes on more mature tones, with jammy fruit and some tertiary hints.
