The Magliocco vine has clear ties to Greece both in its origins and in its name, which in Greek means "very tender knot" most likely given to it because it has a bunch closed like a knot or a fist. It is a variety known in Calabria since the Middle Ages, mentioned in 1601 by Mirafiori and widespread mainly on the Tyrrhenian coast. After a long period of oblivion, during which it risked disappearing, it has recently been rediscovered and valorized, and also replanted in the Ionian part.
It is not possible to identify a precise cultivation area, especially because Magliocco is often pressed together with other typical Calabrian varieties, such as Greco Nero and Marsigliana Nero. Not yet registered in the National Register of Vine Varieties, it is not included in the specifications of any DOC.
