Les vignes dans le ciel - the vines in the sky: poetic words that can be found on the labels of the wines of the Domaine de Beudon. It is not just poetry though, the vines actually rise up to a thousand meters above sea level, arranged on terraces and with often prohibitive slopes: the Domaine de Beudon in fact can only be reached on foot or by private cable car. It is 1971 and Jacques Granges and his wife Marion, fall in love with the Domain located in the Swiss village of Beudon, in the canton of Valais, on the right bank of the Rhone.
The couple, after purchasing and renovating the old Domain in a state of abandonment, began to manage the vineyards in full respect of the surrounding biodiversity. On the 6 hectares of vines they began to apply, in 1993, a biodynamic agriculture, on a terrain that has rocky, sandy and earthy components. The variety of vines present in the territory is remarkable, of which the couple decided to recover some native ones. The hot summers favor the development of an almost Mediterranean vegetation, the mild autumn temperatures reduce the risk of frost favoring the ripening of the grapes. Finally, the mountains protect the area from frequent rainfall.
Today , after the tragic death of Jacques, Marion firmly carries on the Domaine. With the planting of new vines, over 30 wines are obtained, from the most typical whites and reds, to rare sweet wines and almost unknown varieties. The choice of cultivation method together with low yields, indigenous yeasts and the abstention from filtration and clarification, integrate the intimate quality of the wines together with their storability.
