Mantonico is an ancient native Calabrian white grape variety. Its origins are still quite controversial. It could be a variety introduced in Italy at the time of the first Hellenic colonization of Locride or perhaps domesticated in ancient times in the area of ancient Enotria. The Greek origins would seem to be confirmed by the name of the grape variety, whose root could derive from the Greek term Μαντισιος (divinatory-prophetic), referring to an ancient use of wine for ceremonial and propitiatory purposes.
Mantonico is today cultivated mainly along the Ionian coast of Calabria, in the stretch of coast that from the Valle del Neto, Locri and Palizzi descends towards Bianco. It is a hilly region, characterized by calcareous-clayey soils, particularly suited for white grapes.
