Its name derives from the Ligurian dialect “ pigau ” meaning spotted, with reference to the brown dots that appear on the ripe grapes . Pigato seems to have distant origins in Thessaly, imported by the Greeks during the colonization of the peninsula, but its appearance in Liguria dates back to 1600.
