Pigato is a white grape variety from Liguria , where it is grown both along the coast and in the valleys of the hinterland, in the geographical area between Albenga and Imperia . Its name derives from the Ligurian dialect “ pigau ” meaning spotted, with reference to the brown dots that appear on the ripe grapes . Pigato seems to have distant origins in Thessaly, imported by the Greeks during the colonization of the peninsula, but its appearance in Liguria dates back to 1600.
