"Being a winemaker means being observant, curious, thoughtful, hardworking, courageous, meticulous, in love with nature and living beings, respectful of its creatures. It means being an artist with method, bold with moderation, enthusiastic with knowledge, fiery with patience, obstinate with imagination, thrifty with generosity. Being a winemaker means giving the enthusiast the best of oneself through wine" says Jean-Pierre Amoreau.
Château Le Puy sits on the same rocky plateau as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol and is part of the Côtes Francs de Bordeaux appellation. The Amoreau family has lived and produced wine since 1610 at Château le Puy, which sits on the second highest point in the Gironde department, about 110 meters above sea level, known since ancient times as the “plateau of wonders.”
The harvest is done manually in the 54 hectares of vineyards of about 50 years. In 1996 the family purchased Château Pimpine, located on the same rocky plateau. The principles of biodynamic agriculture are followed today as in the past: the cultivation of the vines is done in a completely natural way according to ancestral methods, without the addition of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides or pesticides. The soils composed of clay, silica and limestone are perfect terrains for the growth of the main vines such as: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Carménère, Sémillon.
No selected yeast is added. The “Barthélemy” and “Marie-Elisa” wines are produced without the slightest addition of sulphites. The wine is matured in large oak barrels and finally the bottling is done without filtration, following the phases of the waning moon. This process allows us to obtain eight unique labels, capable of surprising those who drink them for their uniqueness.
