Frappato is a black grape variety present throughout Sicily but essentially in the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa. The grape variety is very ancient and the first certain news dates it back to the 18th century. Its origin is unknown and it seems that it may not be a native grape variety but rather comes from the Iberian peninsula. Frappato is one of the most important black grape varieties in Sicily, so much so that it competes with Nero D'Avola in the creation of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria blend, the only DOCG in Sicilian winemaking.
