The Streaks
Le Strie was founded in 2002 from the passion of two couples of friends, neither originally from Valtellina: Stefano and Luciana, he from Rome, she from Marche, and Paolo and Marisa, both from Veneto. They met in Sondrio for work in the nineties, fell in love with the area, and decided to put down roots there, purchasing the first vineyards on the valley's historic terraces. Stefano, with a degree in agriculture, has been exclusively dedicated to viticulture since 2017. The winery is located in Ponte in Valtellina, the vineyards in Teglio, in the Valgella subzone, and between Castione Andevenno and Sondrio, in the Sassella subzone.
Production is entirely based on Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca, the only grape variety that finds its most authentic expression in Valtellina. The approximately 2 hectares of terraced vineyards are cultivated following the principles of integrated pest management, without herbicides, with limited yields of around 60-65 quintals per hectare, well below the disciplinary limits. Every operation is strictly manual: the dry stone walls of the terraces leave no room for mechanization.
In the cellar, the approach is traditional and artisanal. Spontaneous fermentations occur with indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in large oak barrels for long periods, are not clarified, and receive very low doses of sulfites. The range includes Rosso di Valtellina DOC, Valtellina Superiore DOCG, Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, Alpi Retiche Nebbiolo IGT, and the flagship cru, Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva DOCG, produced only in the best vintages with five years of aging between wood and bottle. Approximately 10,000 bottles a year: numbers that speak volumes about the scale and care of this reality.
