The main growing area of Aligoté is in Burgundy. Here the grape variety even has its own Appellation with the wine Bourgogne Aligoté. It is grown in Eastern Europe and, in smaller areas, also in Australia, Chile, Georgia, Switzerland and the United States.
The “second” grape variety of Burgundy produces light wines, with a lot of acidity and a short shelf life. It is used for the production of aperitif wines and is the traditional base for Kir.
It is a vigorous vine but with variable productivity, capable of producing wines with good acidity, sometimes even more energetic than Chardonnay itself, but with much lower yields. It does not tolerate oak well because its aromas are too delicate. The bunch is conical-cylindrical in shape, with irregularly sized grapes.
It is very popular in Romania, where it exceeds 10,000 ha, but also in Bulgaria, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Kazakhstan, where it is mainly used for the production of sparkling wines. To a much lesser extent it is also found in California and Chile. There are few occasions to find a wine produced with this vine, which is worth tasting.
