"First of all, we are the two of us who personally take care of the company and we were not born here or ended up here by chance, but we chose it, as an area and as a way of life. Maybe, as often happens in these situations, without much awareness of what we were doing (we acquired that over time), but certainly with determination and with all our economic, physical and mental resources": these are the words of Antonella Tacci and Attilio Lombardi, who better than any other incipit invite us, taking us by the hand, to discover the winemaking reality of "Martilde".
We are in the Oltrepò Pavese area, near the municipality of Rovescala and precisely in the hamlet of Santa Croce: it is here that we find the Martilde Agricultural Company, located at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level and extending over a total surface area of 18 hectares, entirely planted with vines.
Among the rows, following the most suitable tradition of the territory, the varieties planted are primarily red grapes, so we find Croatina and Bonarda above all, but also Barbera and Pinot Noir to follow, with only Malvasia di Candia grapes to hold high the flag of the white grape varieties. In the vineyard, every agronomic choice and every work phase is carried out in a careful and rigorous manner, respecting to the maximum what is the balance of the environment, nature, ecosystem and biodiversity, so as to arrive at harvesting healthy, pure, concentrated bunches rich in every smallest organoleptic nuance.
In the cellar, the spaces are functional and well-arranged, so as to carry out each production step with maximum efficiency, always remembering that the guiding light remains the raw material, worked year after year without ever distorting its essence, and on the contrary trying to enhance everything that the season and the territory have been able to shape in the grapes.
The names that come out at the end of it all are “Piume”, “Dedica”, “Il Gigante”, “Nina”, “Ghiro Rosso d'Inverno”, “La strega, la gazza e il pioppo” and “Zaffo”: labels that tell the most beautiful Oltrepò Pavese when it comes to wine. Bottles to try one after the other without missing any.
