Verdejo is a white grape variety native to central Spain, where it is the basis of the white wines of the DO Rueda. In this area Verdejo is the most widely grown variety and is vinified both pure (min. 85%) and in blend (min. 50%) with Viura or Sauvignon. Verdejo seems to be native to the Castile and Leon region, although its more distant origins seem to point to southern Spain. After centuries of oblivion, Verdejo has recently been rediscovered by some producers of Rueda and is now grown throughout Spain. Its wines have considerable depth and aging potential. They have body, balanced acidity and herbaceous and hazelnut notes on the nose. It is also used in sparkling wine production with the ancestral method, obtaining the Rueda Espumoso wine. Verdejo prefers dry and continental climates, with strong temperature variations and arid soils. It has compact bunches with thick-skinned, yellow-greenish grapes. It has early sprouting and ripening, rather low yields and vigor. It is rather sensitive to powdery mildew attacks.
