Cannonau (also called Cannonao, Garnacha in Spanish and Grenache in French) is the most widespread black grape variety in Sardinia.

The origin of the vine has long been uncertain: most experts believed it was imported from the Iberian Peninsula. However, recent studies have shown its endemic belonging to Sardinia, in fact remains of grape seeds dating back to 3200 years ago have been found in various areas of the island. In consideration of this, Cannonau can be considered the oldest wine in the Mediterranean Basin.
