St. George Abbey
Abbazia San Giorgio is a very small and young company that is located on the island of Pantelleria. The vineyards, divided into several parts, extend over 3 and a half hectares in Khamma, one of the greenest districts of the island located on the eastern side and characterized by terraces overlooking the sea. The vines stand out at 300 meters above sea level on volcanic soils and reach an average age of 60 years. Two thirds are grown with Zibibbo, while the remainder is cultivated with Pignatello, commonly known as Perricone and locally as Nostrale, Carignano and Nerello Mascalese. Abbazia San Giorgio has decided to focus on organic management, also using biodynamic techniques. No chemical products are used to protect the vines from weeds and parasites. No fertilization of any kind is carried out, but we simply bury the wild herbs at the end of the winter season. In the cellar, the same production philosophy continues, reducing human intervention to a minimum. The production of Abbazia San Giorgio is aligned with the most artisanal concept of wine, understood as a creature that communicates with the surrounding world without being subjected to it and evolves in the glass, giving emotions even after days. Abbazia San Giorgio wines are savoury and fresh expressions of the Pantelleria area that offer a journey through the warm dry wind and the scents of citrus fruits and capers of the Sicilian island.
