Catarratto

Catarratto is one of the most traditional and classic white grape varieties of Sicily, considered by many scholars to be among the oldest.

Catarratto is originally a progenitor of Garganega, a grape widely used in Veneto . It enjoyed great success in the second half of the twentieth century due to its great productivity, also being used in the production of Marsala wine. At the end of the century it lost part of its importance, partially to the advantage of Grillo and international grapes, but it remains the first grape grown in Sicily (where it constitutes 33% of the total vineyard area) and the second in Italy after Trebbiano Toscano.

It presents itself with a medium-sized, pyramidal, elongated and compact bunch, with two wings. The grapes are also medium-sized, spherical, slightly pruinose, green-yellow tending towards golden on the surfaces directly exposed to the sun's rays .
