Burello - Marche Rosso IGT 2021 Fattoria San Lorenzo

Burello is the local Marche dialect name for the small, hairy hares that live in Natalino Crognaletti's biodynamic vineyard and are responsible for keeping the grass short between the rows.

60% Montepulciano and 40% Sangiovese, from older vines than those of Vigna di Gino. Spontaneous fermentation in steel with indigenous yeasts, long maceration of about twenty-five days on the skins. The aging is the wine's signature: twenty-four months in a 28-hectoliter large barrel, so that the wood imparts structure and slow oxygenation without imposing its own taste. Bottled without filtration, further rest for several months in the bottle. Only five thousand bottles per year.

What emerges is an unusual red: all the substance of Montepulciano is there, but the tannin is unexpectedly fine, the structure is broad and never aggressive, the finish is elegant. Intense nose of blackberry, dark plum, sweet tobacco, cocoa and a hint of black pepper. It is one of those reds that completely changes your perception of Montepulciano from Marche: less muscle, more balance, more depth.

Vinificazione

Montepulciano and Sangiovese from older vineyards than 'Il Gino'. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and maceration on the skins for about 25 days. Twenty-four months of aging in 28-hectoliter large barrels, then several months in bottle. Bottled without filtration. Approximately 5,000 bottles per year.

Profumo

Intense and deep nose of blackberry, dark plum, kirsch, sweet tobacco, cocoa and a hint of black pepper. Floral notes of dried rose and violet in the background.

Gusto

Broad and wide in the mouth, with surprisingly fine tannins for a Montepulciano and a balsamic freshness that balances the body. An elegant sip that doesn't resemble Montepulciano wines dressed up with new oak. Decant if opened young.

Abbinamento

Braised meats, ossobuco, herb-crusted lamb, rich pasta dishes, aged pecorino, pasta with game ragù, long-aged cheeses.
