Verduzzo Venezia Giulia IGT 2021 Bressan
Verduzzo Friulano is a variety mentioned as early as the mid-19th century as one of Friuli's most typical vines, now almost forgotten because it is difficult to work with and out of fashion. At Bressan, in Farra d'Isonzo, Fulvio Bressan has made it a flagship wine by vinifying it strictly dry, contrary to the sweet version with which it is more commonly known. The grapes are harvested late to allow the tannins to ripen well, then spontaneously ferment with a long maceration on the skins of about four weeks. This is followed by over three years of aging on its lees in two-thousand-liter oak barrels with periodic bâtonnage, before transfer to stainless steel for natural decantation and bottling without filtration. The result is an amber-yellow, full-bodied, slightly tannic white wine, with the almond notes that remain the hallmark of great Friulian white wines. A Verduzzo like it used to be, for those who know what they are looking for.
