Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante DOCG 2020 Pian dell'Orino
The Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante comes from the Cancello Rosso vineyards and the lower part of Pian Bassolino, two plots that Pian dell'Orino cultivates next to the Greppo dei Biondi Santi, one of the sacred sites of Italian Sangiovese. It is a blend that changes from year to year, an expression of different terroirs: calcareous clays, marls, alberese, and flysch soils, with volcanic nuances coming from the nearby Mount Amiata. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach, a South Tyrolean-German couple who arrived in Montalcino in 1997, work it with biodynamic slowness and Central European precision: manual selection berry by berry, spontaneous fermentation without added sulfites, three weeks in the vat followed by as many days of post-fermentation maceration, then forty-eight months in large 25-hectoliter oak barrels before bottling without filtration. The result is a Brunello that combines the classicism of the territory with the freshness of biodynamics, with fine tannins, lively acidity, and a linearity that requires time to express itself. A Brunello worth waiting for.

Manual harvest and berry-by-berry selection on the sorting table. Cold pre-fermentative maceration, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts up to 32-34°C for approximately 21 days, followed by 20 days of post-fermentative maceration. Forty-eight months of aging in 25-hectoliter large oak barrels, spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel. Bottled without filtration, further bottle aging of at least one year before release. No added sulfites during winemaking. |
Profumo |
Elegant and layered nose of red cherry, fresh plum, violet, lavender, a hint of Mediterranean herbs and cedar, with mineral undertones recalling the terroir. |
Gusto |
Silky and profound on the palate, with extremely fine and perfectly integrated tannins, lively acidity, and a rare linearity for the denomination. Full-bodied but never heavy, with a very long finish showing mineral and spicy notes. A Brunello for aging, capable of withstanding twenty years in the cellar without issue. |
Abbinamento |
Florentine steak, braised beef, noble game, white truffle, long-aged cheeses like Pecorino di Pienza and Parmigiano Stravecchio, meditation. |
