Il Poggio is a small winery in the Piacenza area, born as a farm and known for its typical and territorial wines marked by the signature “Vino del Poggio”. The winery is managed with ancient peasant wisdom by Andrea Cervini, born among the vineyards and promoter of clean viticulture that does not use pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers, but only sulfur and copper. The vineyards of the Vino del Poggio winery are located in the Trebbia Valley, in the Statto area, under the municipality of Travo: a fertile and suggestive territory, surrounded by woods and hills. On these lands, on a cold morning of December 18, 218 BC, the Roman legionaries, led by the consul Tiberio Sempronio Longo, faced Hannibal's troops in the Battle of the Trebbia, suffering a bloody defeat. Of the war elephants used by Hannibal to defeat the Roman army, only one survived the cold and the battle. The symbol of the elephant that appears on the labels of Poggio wines alludes to this episode. Produced according to tradition and with artisanal methods, Poggio wines are distinguished by their pleasantness of drink, great aromatic cleanliness and uniqueness of expression. They are made from typical grapes of the territory, from long macerations, from a minimal use of sulphites and from barrel refinements, furthermore they are not filtered before being put on the market. In this way the best characteristics of the territory are enhanced to give life to good, expressive, extraordinarily gastronomic wines.
