Volcanic slopes are very often difficult to cultivate due to the hardness of the soil and the steepness of the territory, slopes that often require significant terracing work. This is why volcanic wines can often be ascribed to the so-called “heroic viticulture” trend, that is, the one that is practiced in difficult, sometimes extreme conditions. The effort is rewarded, however, with wines with a unique character and identity.

Volcanic soils have decidedly peculiar characteristics: they are particularly rich in phosphorus, magnesium and potassium. It is precisely from these elements that wines are produced that are characterised by a complexity that is not easy to find in other soils, a characteristic that is combined with a great minerality and acidity. In addition to this, volcanic territories are often subject to significant temperature variations, a factor that favors the aromatic components.

It should be noted, however, that even volcanic soils can be very different from each other. There is therefore not just one type of soil when talking about volcanic soil, although the characteristics described above can be a good common thread that links the wines belonging to this category.
