In Primeaux-Prissey, a hamlet located just south of the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on the Côte de Nuits, the Domaine Machard de Gramont offers spontaneous expressions of the territory, created through its own peculiar stylistic signature. This family-run estate was founded in 1983 by Arnaud Machard de Gramont, today supported by his sons Alban and Alexis. Previously, he worked in the large family Domaine consisting of 32 hectares, which was then split into three different cellars, one of which was inherited by Arnaud. Over the following years this winemaker borgognone has carried out a great job of recovering old vineyards located on the hills, abandoned first because of the wine crisis caused by phylloxera and then because of the wars. The 20 hectares of vineyards available to the Domaine are located between the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. The varieties grown are those of the noble tradition of the Côte d'Or, namely Chardonnay for the whites and Pinot Noir for the reds. The soils, very diversified depending on the climate in question, are predominantly calcareous-clayey. Plants with an average age of about 30 years grow on them, with some plants dating back to 1914. Once optimal ripeness is reached, the manual harvest is carried out, followed by a rigorous selection of the grapes. In the cellar, a traditional style is adopted, with long fermentations carried out in open wooden vats . The red grapes, vinified for 10-20% as whole bunches, are placed in cold pre-fermentation maceration to enhance the juiciness of the aromas. Finally, the masses are aged for many months in French and American oak barrels, 10-25% new.
